Double 7 - Love in the Midst of War

A poignant tragedy at the heart of the Civil War

Published in 2018, Double 7 brings together Yann (script) and André Juillard (art) for a work that is both romantic and tragic, where passion clashes with the fury of History. Set during the Spanish Civil War of 1936, the album explores the fragility of love amidst chaos, through the intertwined destinies of a Soviet pilot and a Spanish female militia member.

A love born in the flames of war

Roman Kapulov, a young Russian aviator sent by Stalin, joins the Republicans to fight against Franco's troops. A prodigy pilot, he performs numerous feats aboard his Mosca fighter and earns the nickname El Rey de las Moscas – the King of the Flies.
His meeting with Lulia Montago, a spirited and courageous militia member, turns his life upside down. Between them an immediate passion is born, as pure as it is forbidden, in a world where every day could be the last.

The disillusionment of ideals

Very quickly, illusions are shattered. Roman discovers Soviet manipulations within the Republican camp itself, where political calculations have replaced the ideals of freedom. For her part, Lulia struggles to survive in a Spain torn apart by betrayal and fear.
Their love then becomes a fragile refuge, a spark of light in a world plunged into darkness. But as is often the case with Yann, passion does not triumph over tragedy: war eventually engulfs everything.

A work of rare intensity

Yann's script is distinguished by its subtlety and restraint. He approaches the war without black-and-white moralizing, showing the moral complexity of the sides and the corruption of ideals.
André Juillard's art, with its classical elegance, elevates the narrative. His panels alternate between the spectacular violence of aerial combat and the intimacy of faces, where fear, desire, and resignation can be read.
The golden light of the Spanish landscapes further reinforces the contrast between the beauty of the world and its cruelty.

Between love, disillusionment, and sacrifice

Double 7 accurately explores universal themes: love in the face of war, loyalty, disenchantment, and sacrifice. Through Roman and Lulia, the entire fragility of the human condition is expressed, caught between fidelity to one's ideals and the call of the heart.
Their story, brief but overwhelming, reminds us that even in the din of weapons, tenderness and beauty can still exist.

Conclusion

A work that is romantic, political, and tragic all at once, Double 7 establishes itself as a major comic book about the Spanish Civil War. Yann and Juillard create a narrative of rare intensity, where every page breathes emotion and truth.
Between heaven and earth, between love and death, Double 7 pays tribute to all those who loved amidst the chaos — and who managed to remain human despite the war.

✨ In summary:
Double 7 is a powerful aerial and sentimental fresco. A masterpiece where love and war wage a battle with no winner, magnified by the luminous art of André Juillard and the sensitive writing of Yann.
